Melvin Gordon says Broncos’ offense ‘runs my style of football’

Melvin Gordon believes he will be a better fit in the Broncos’ offense under Pat Shurmur than he was in the Chargers’ offense under Frank Reich, Ken Whisenhunt and Shane Steichen from 2015-2019.

During an interview on Ian Rapoport’s podcast last week, Gordon explained why he’s better suited to play in Denver.

“[Los Angeles’ offense] really didn’t play out to my strengths, especially the first couple years there,” Gordon said, via NFL.com’s Kevin Patra. “I kind of just had to adjust and make it work. It kind of wasn’t a system built for me. But I feel like Denver kinda runs my style of football, and I think it’s a great fit.”

Gordon signed a two-year, $16 million contract with the Broncos in March after totaling 6,113 yards from scrimmage and scoring 47 touchdowns in five seasons with the Chargers. If he’s truly a better fit in Denver’s offense, Gordon might put up even better numbers with the Broncos.

“They run a lot of inside zones, and that’s what I did a lot at Wisconsin,” Gordon said. “It’s going to really help me get back in the feel of what I do best. I’m an inside-zone runner.”

In Denver, Gordon will be sharing touches with Phillip Lindsay, who rushed for over 1,000 yards in each of the last two seasons. The Broncos should have a dangerous one-two rushing attack in 2020.
