'Meltdown' - Newcastle fans fear Rafa Benitez is set for Premier League return with Wolves

Newcastle United fans are fearful popular former manager Rafa Benitez could be set for a return to the Premier League with Wolves next season.

Nuno Espirito Santo will leave Molineux by mutual agreement at the end of the season following four years with the club.

The Portuguese guided Wolves to the Championship title in first season in 2017, before securing an impressive seventh-placed finish in the Premier League.

The 47-year-old was contracted to the club until 2023, and led them on a remarkable run to the Europa League quarter final last season.

However, Wolves have struggled this season and sit 12th with a final-day fixture against Manchester United to come.

Nuno's departure has prompted speculation over his successor in the West Midlands, with former Benfica boss Bruno Lage considered the early favourite among the bookmakers.

Former Magpies boss Benitez is considered a strong contender for the role, with Oddschecker currently listing the 61-year-old as the second favourite at 4/1.

The ex-Liverpool and Real Madrid manager has been available since leaving Dalian Pro in January, and is known to be keen on securing a return to England.

It's a scenario which a number of Newcastle fans are dreading, judging by the response on social media.

'Fans will have a meltdown'

'Emotional mess'

'Stuck in limbo'

'While I cry'

'Year is 2024'

'Not mentally ready'
