Melissa McCarthy ‘smuggled sandwiches’ into Golden Globes so stars didn’t get hungry

Melissa McCarthy has revealed she secretly smuggled sandwiches into the 2019 Golden Globes in a bid to stop guests from getting hungry.

McCarthy, who was nominated for the Best Actress in a Motion Picture Drama gong for her role in film Will You Ever Forgive Me?, told how she took 30 ham and cheese sandwiches to the glitzy awards.

She told Variety: “I've been handing them out to everyone. Next year, I'm bringing hot dogs.”

A baffled Jessica Chastain added: “How did she get them in here? But it’s a good idea because by the time you get into the ballroom dinner has already been served, and you’re always so hungry.”

According to the publication, the sandwiches came wrapped in their own packaging and appeared to have been purchased from a local food marketplace in Los Angeles.

The gesture was made public after Olivia Colman gave the star a shout-out during her very British acceptance speech.

Colman, who secured the gong for her royal role as Queen Anne in The Favourite, opened with with “Cor blimey”, before later referring to her co-stars Emma Stone and Rachel Weisz as “ma b******” and thanking director Yorgos Lanthimos.

She also recalled noteworthy experiences during filming for the drama, including travelling on a private jet.

She then melted hearts, appearing to be in disbelief, as she told husband Ed Sinclair and children Hall, 12, and Finn, 14, to “look” at her on stage.

McCarthy missed out on the gong to Glenn Close, who was awarded for her role in The Wife.

Close won the internet after she appeared visibly shocked at the announcement of her name, after Lady Gaga was hotly tipped to take home the trophy for A Star is Born.

But Gaga didn't go home empty handed, picking up the gong for Best Original Song for her track Shallow. She celebrated the win with a low-key night in with her fiancé Christian Carino and a bowl of Fruity Pebbles cereal.
