Melissa McCarthy's weight loss - all-liquid diet that left her 'starved and crazy'

Melissa McCarthy has become a household name over the last decade, with Netflix ’s God’s Favorite Idiot the latest series in a long line of hits.

It wasn’t until her appearance in Gilmore Girls when she got her first big break, with her weight never being an issue in landing the role.

Regardless, that didn’t stop the actress from signing up to a doctor-supervised diet, one that led her feeling “starved and crazy” at the time.

Over the years, Melissa has followed different diets in the hopes of cutting down her weight, and has reportedly shed 75 pounds over her career.

A full liquid, or all-liquid diet is simply a meal plan that consists solely of fluids and foods that are normally liquid.

When Melissa got the call for Gilmore Girls, it put her on track to become the star she is now.

Despite worrying about it at the time, her weight never stopped her from securing the role, as she told People: “Weight never came up.”

However, she still pursued a slimmer figure, getting in contact with a doctor who recommended a supervised all-liquid diet.

The aim was to consume no more than 500 calories a day, which ultimately worked as she lost 70lb over the course of three months in 2003.

However, she later said: "I’d never do that again. I felt starved and crazy half the time."

Today, Melissa has moved away from the doctor-assisted meal plans and allowed herself more freedom when it comes to diet.

In fact, it appears she currently isn’t following a specific plan, only casually monitoring her eating and exercise - although she has cut all the fun out.

Back in 2016, it was reported she lost an additional 50 pounds, though she wasn’t hiding any secrets on how she did it.

Speaking to Extra, she said: “No trick, nothing to tell, just super boring life. You bring it real down, you don't do anything fun and you go to bed at 7:30pm — that's the trick.”

She isn’t aiming for a specific weight target either, telling Refinery29: “I have [lost weight], but I'll be back again. I'll be up, I'll be down, probably for the rest of my life.

“The thing is, if that is the most interesting thing about me, I need to go have a lavender farm in Minnesota and give this up. There has to be something more."

God’s Favorite Idiot is available to watch now exclusively on Netflix.
