Melissa McCarthy lost five stone by going on liquid diet but felt 'starved and crazy'

Melissa McCarthy has opened up about battling with her weight throughout her life, as well as detailing a time when she tried an all-liquid diet.

The actress who is best known for her roles in Gilmore Girls, Identity Thief, Bridesmaids and The Heat, once lost five stones through a pretty restrictive diet.

In an interview with The Rolling Stones, Melissa opened up about when she first started worrying about her weight.

She explained to the publication that she thinks she worried about weight too soon: "when it was only little-kid weight."

Melissa also spoke about battling with her body through high school, despite her now looking back at photographs from that time when she was a cheerleader and: "doing sprints, lifting weights, doing gymnastics, playing tennis."

The actress told the publication: "And while I wasn’t reed-thin like some girls … I was a size six the entire time. So what on Earth was I freaking out about?

"I’ve been every size in the world,” she adde. “Parts of my twenties, I was in great shape, but I didn’t appreciate it. If I was a six or an eight, I thought, ‘Why aren’t I a two or a four?’"

The Gilmore Girls actress then moved to Los Angeles and gained 1.7 stone as a result of not exercising and eating unhealthily.

Wanting to lose weight in a timely manner, Melissa ended up going on an all-liquid diet that allowed her just 500 calories a day.

This was all around the time of when she first starred on the popular TV show Gilmore Girls.

Melissa doesn't focus on the number of the scales, and has previously spoken about how her weight will likely fluctuate for the rest of her life.

Speaking to Refinery29, the actress said: "I have [lost weight], but I'll be back again.

"I'll be up, I'll be down, probably for the rest of my life.

"The thing is, if that is the most interesting thing about me, I need to go have a lavender farm in Minnesota and give this up. There has to be something more."

The hilarious actress has also spoken out about not worrying about her weight any more, telling CBS This Morning : "I finally said, ‘Oh for God sakes, stop worrying about it,’ and it may be the best thing I’ve ever done.

"I truly stopped worrying about it. I stopped over-analysing, over-thinking, over-doing anything… I just stopped constantly being worried about it and I think there’s something to kinda loosening up and not being so nervous and rigid about it that, bizarrely, has worked."
