Melissa Mathison remembered at Oscars ceremony

Screenwriter Melissa Mathison has been remembered by the Oscars, as part of the Academy Awards’ In Memoriam section.

Mathison was nominated for a best original screenplay Oscar for her best known film, the Steven Spielberg-directed ET the Extra-Terrestrial. She also received Golden Globe and Bafta nominations for the same film, and won the WGA award for best original drama.

Mathison’s other principal credits include the 1979 adaption of The Black Stallion and Kundun, released in 1997, a biopic of the Dalai Lama directed by Martin Scorsese.

Mathison married actor Harrison Ford in 1983, divorcing him in 2004; she died in 2015 aged 65. He last major credit is another Spielberg film, The BFG, adapated from Roald Dahl’s novel and due for release in summer 2016.
