A woman broke coronavirus lockdown restrictions in Melbourne to drive 75km for a kebab.

Victoria Police said they came across the woman in Werribee, south west of Melbourne on Monday night, after the city's 8pm to 5am curfew had come into effect.

The woman told the officers she was from Geelong and had travelled the lengthy distance in search of a kebab. She then had plans to visit her boyfriend in Werribee.

Officers served the woman with a $1,652 (£917) coronavirus fine for breaching the curfew.

Another man was fined for visiting his "semi-intimate partner" during the curfew and two women were caught eating ice cream in the street at 2am.

When questioned by police the women claimed they thought it was 6am.

Victoria Police issued a total of 171 fines overnight to people breaching the lockdown guidelines, including 31 people who failed to wear a face covering and 67 for breaching the curfew.

It comes as Victoria recorded its lowest count of new Covid-19 cases in more than 10 weeks on Monday.

The state reported 41 new cases and nine death in the latest 24-hour period on Monday.

Meanwhile there were 55 new infections on Tuesday, said the Department of Health and Human Services.

Eight further deaths were recorded bringing the state’s death toll to 683.
