Melbourne warehouse owner sued over blaze

Taxpayers footed the bill to clean up after the blaze that spewed toxic smoke over the city's west. (AAP)

The owner of a Melbourne warehouse that went up in flames is being sued by WorkSafe to recoup more than $7 million in clean-up costs.

Taxpayers were hit with the clean-up bill for the Tottenham blaze that spewed toxic smoke over the city's west and polluted local waterways in August 2018.

The warehouse contained aerosol cans and 44-gallon drums filled with grease, oil and acetone residues, and the fire took 17 hours to control.

WorkSafe is suing Danbol Pty Ltd and director Christopher Baldwin for costs totalling more than $7.1 million.

In a writ lodged with Victoria's Supreme Court, WorkSafe said it continued to incur costs associated with the site and was entitled to recover the money.

In February 2020, Danbol was found not to be insured at the time of the blaze.
