Melbourne skies lit up with NYE fireworks

Families were disappointed at the lack of CBD rooftop fireworks which have previously wowed crowds. (AAP)

The first of two firework shows have lit up the skies over Melbourne as Victorians wait nervously to welcome the new year and what it might bring.

Thousands were drawn to live entertainment sites around the CBD where they were treated to a light show, DJ sets and other entertainment.

Partygoers enjoyed slightly cooler temperatures for the first of the evening's firework displays.

The temperature in Melbourne dropped to 25.4 at 9.30pm after peaking at 37.3 degrees at 6pm.

Not all were thrilled with the celebrations though.

Many families looking to celebrate closer to home on a day when the state's COVID-19 case numbers reached another record level were disappointed at the lack of CBD rooftop fireworks which have wowed suburban crowds in previous years.
