Melbourne Redditor Slammed For ‘Entitled’ Complaint About A Café: ‘Are We Overreacting?’

A Melbourne student is getting dragged on Reddit after asking punters if they were “overreacting” for complaining about other customers at a busy cafe.

Redditor u/FlinflanFluddle4 has been branded as “extremely entitled” by fellow users on r/melbourne after complaining about the noise levels at a caféon the popular subreddit.

“Are we overreacting or is this extremely entitled?” they began.

“15 other seating options and this loud group of women with their loud kids sat right behind a few of us studying/reading. We are lightly debating this within our study group.”

The Redditor went on to explain that if they were going to be the noisy patron, sit somewhere that others are just as loud.

“Personally, if I’m going to make noise or talk, I opt to sit where others are doing the same – or at least not sit near others that are clearly seeking a quiet space,” they continued.

“To me that’s considerate. One of us is split and one thinks you cannot expect people to consider others in a public space like this.”

Are we overreacting

Immediately after u/FlinflanFluddle4 hit post, the thread was lit up with comments calling out the Redditor for overreacting and being entitled.

“I’m sorry but there’s nothing wrong with people chatting in public places, especially in a cafe,” one person wrote.

“It’s a café, so you’re going to have to put up with other people while you’re there. It’s a stretch to think that other people are going to deliberately go out of their way to make sure you have a nice barrier of quiet space,” added another Redditor.

“Very entitled of you, yes. You’re studying in a public place, there will be noise. Grow up,” a third penned.

While most of the critiques are quite bloody harsh (as seen above), one Redditor gave OP the benefit of the doubt, explaining that the loud customers could be a victim of the “sheep theory”.

“In this case, you sit at a table… this other group comes and sits at the table next to you, rather than one further away. Why? Because subconsciously, they think they’re not allowed to sit at those other tables. They need to cluster. I’ve never quite worked out why this happens,” the user wrote.

“Yes it’s like in car parks when you’ve parked and there are hundreds of free spaces around… and someone comes and parks right next to you. Do they think that they can’t park properly if your car isn’t there as a guide?”

YEOUCH. Definitely not a fun ride when Reddit drags ya.

In all honesty, I reckon we’ve all been in OP’s shoes before. For me, I always roll my eyes when an eshay jumps on the T1 Western with a JBL UE Boom blasting OneFour. However, I know it ain’t my place to complain since it’s a) a public place and b) who doesn’t love a little bit of OneFour, amirite?

ANNNND after a couple of bevvies, I’ve definitely been in the eshay’s shoes where I would be cackling loudly with friends in public.

At the end of the day, if you’re down for some silence, best to seek out libraries, the silent carriage, or in our Redditor’s case, just stay the heck home and eat.
