The man accused of murdering his girlfriend Ju "Kelly" Zhang has faced court as authorities await autopsy results.

Joon Seong Tan, 35, has been charged with murdering Ms Zhang, 33, on February 1, when the mother of an eight-year-old boy was last seen at her Epping home.

Police confirmed Ms Zhang's remains had been found in landfill at Wollert, in Melbourne's north, on June 23.

Tan on Friday appeared in a virtual sitting of Melbourne Magistrates Court, along with a Mandarin interpreter.

He did not say anything apart from confirming he could understand and his matter was adjourned until next year as authorities await autopsy results.

Tan was initially taken into custody six days after Ms Zhang's disappearance, but released without charge pending further police inquiries.

The accused killer was arrested for a second time at Melbourne Airport on February 10.

Prosecutors earlier said more than 3000 hours of CCTV need analysing as part of the investigation.

Tan remains in custody and will next face court for a five-day committal hearing on March 21.
