Melbourne homes raids linked to alleged massacre plot

Police are again reassuring the public there is no threat of a terrorist attack in Melbourne on New Year's Eve, after raiding homes across city.

State and federal police, along with members from the Australian Security Intelligence Organisation, searched properties on yesterday at Coolaroo and Glenroy in Melbourne's north, Tarneit in the city's west and Berwick in the south-east.

It follows several other raids in suburban Melbourne after the arrest of Ali Khalif Shire Ali on Monday afternoon in Werribee.

Mr Ali, 20, appeared Melbourne Magistrates' Court on Tuesday charged with preparing to commit a terrorist attack and gathering documents to facilitate a terrorist act.

Police have alleged Mr Ali was trying to get an automatic rifle to "shoot and kill as many people as he could" around Federation Square, in Melbourne's CBD, during New Year's Eve celebrations.

He has also been accused of accessing documents produced by Al Qaeda, including a "guidebook" on how to commit a terrorist act and how to use firearms.

Mr Ali has been remanded in custody to return to court in March.
