Victoria Police and the AFP found a gun, ammunition and drugs during a search of a Melbourne home. (AAP)

A Melbourne man banned from owning weapons has been arrested after he tried to escape police by jumping out his bedroom window and on to a rooftop.

Anti-gang crime squads from Victoria Police and the AFP found a handgun, ammunition and a large quantity of drugs during a search of the Roxburgh Park home on Monday morning.

A 32-year-old Roxburgh Park man, the subject of the firearm prohibition order compliance search, allegedly tried to run from police by jumping out his bedroom window on to the roof.

He was arrested a short time later.

He was charged with trafficking and possessing cannabis, possessing cocaine, possessing methylamphetamines, handling stolen goods and firearm-related offences.

He was due to appear before Melbourne Magistrates Court on Monday.

Firearm prohibition orders remain in effect for 10 years for adults and five years for children.

Since they were introduced in 2018, Victoria Police has issued more than 1300 orders.
