Melanie Griffith's bedroom has convinced me that wallpaper is made for ceilings – the statement design move is as bold as it is elegant

Melanie Griffith.

For the maximalists among us, wallpaper has always been a go-to decor move. However, there's been a clear rise among even the minimalists in experimental wall decor lately, including wallpaper-drenching and covering the fifth wall (that is, the ceiling).

Melanie Griffith is on board the wallpaper train, having recently shared a photo of her ornate bedroom idea on her Instagram page. Her space features dark green, patterned wallpaper covering not only the walls but the ceiling, too, creating a wrapped and cohesive feel to the elegant space. It works particularly well with the organic elements of the room, like her natural wood closet doors and ottoman at the foot of her bed.

In short, it's giving us excellent wallpaper ideas.

Melanie mentions in the caption that she sourced her bold floral print from Blackpop, a British wallpaper and home furnishing boutique, contributing to the historic feel of her bedroom. However, there are tons of different approaches to a maximalist, wallpapered bedroom, whether you go for a detailed print or a muralled covering.

Maximalist wallpapers and decorative ceilings are both trending independently; combined, they offer a unique and timeless look in any space, designers say.

'Alongside the trend for statement ceilings, there is also a growing appreciation for wallpaper throughout the home,' explains designer Rebecca Hughes.

She continues: 'Personally, I feel wallpaper can completely transform a space, elevating it instantly. Currently, we are using a lot of hand-blocked prints and vintage floral wallpapers, creating a playful look. We often mix eye-catching printed fabrics with plain linens, velvets, or wool to prevent the space from feeling too busy. I love pattern mixing and playing with varying scales in a scheme, whether that be large prints, small ditsy florals, bold stripes, or solid expanses of color.'

Per Rebecca's advice, if you are going to introduce bold wallpaper to your space, ensure that other furniture and accessories balance out the walls and ceiling, whether it's through natural materials or neutral colors.

The result is sure to be as engaging as it is chic.
