Melania Trump 'shamelessly' auctions off signed hat with bids starting at $250,000

Melania Trump is auctioning off a signed hat, with bids starting at $250,000 (£180,000) - and it's unclear what she plans to do with the money.

The ex First Lady, who is married to billionaire property mogul and POTUS45 Donald Trump, seemingly does not need the cash, with the ploy leaving even those who know her scratching their heads.

Melania has been urged to confirm whether she intends to keep the bulk of the proceeds for herself, with her website only vaguely stating a "portion of the proceeds" will go to charity.

The hat up for grabs is the white, wide-brimmed, crepe hat she wore in April 2018 for a state visit of French President Emmanuel Macron to the White House.

It was created by the 51-year-old's personal stylist, designer Hervé Pierre to match the off-the-rack white Michael Kors Collection suit she wore for the occasion.

Melania has also included a watercolour painting of her face in profile, wearing the hat and a non-fungible-token (NFT) of the watercolour, with some animation, in what her website calls 'The Head of State Collection'.

The first piece of art was previously up for sale for a limited time until December 31.

The former model and businesswoman has been accused of breaking tradition and respect for her former role for her own personal gain.

Author of First Women: The Grace and Power of America's Modern First Ladies, Kate Andersen Brower, told CNN : "[Selling her hat] lends credence to the notion that the Trumps were always shameless about making money and that Melania keeps proving that she is a Trump through and through."

While an unnamed former close friend of Melania's told the US network: "What's next? The jacket?"

They were referring to the 'I really don't care. Do u?' jacket the former First Lady wore during a June 2018 trip to Texas to visit facilities holding detained families who had crossed into the US.

A second person who worked in a senior position in the Trump White House said: "It's unseemly. She is trying to build herself a nest-egg of cash built upon a role that the American people elected her husband for her to inhabit."

A third, who was friends with Melania for many years, said she needs to be clear whether any of the money is going to charity.

"If she is going to do this, sell her personal things, she has to publicly disclose the financials," they said.

A small paragraph on Melania's website says: "A portion of the proceeds derived from this auction will provide foster care children with access to computer science and technology education."
