Mel Kiper mocks Iowa S prospect to Panthers in second round

Under Ron Rivera, the Panthers have generally preferred to start two veterans at the safety position. This might be the year that changes. Eric Reid is already locked in for another three years after signing an extension, but the team needs another to pair with him after allowing Mike Adams to walk in free agency.

In a new three-round grade A mock by Mel Kiper at ESPN, he has Carolina picking Florida State EDGE Brian Burns at No. 16 overall and then addressing that need in the second round by picking Iowa safety prospect Amani Hooker.

“After running a 4.48 40 at the combine, Hooker is another defensive back who is rising up boards. He is a good tackler who could play close to the line of scrimmage.”

Hooker (6-foot, 210 pounds) put up a total of six interceptions and nine pass breakups in 25 college games. Here’s a look at his tape.

Hooker vs. Iowa State

Hooker vs. Mississippi State

Hooker vs. Maryland

If Hooker is still there at No. 47, the Panthers could certainly do worse.
