Mel Gibson to star in ‘John Wick’ prequel miniseries, ‘The Continental’

Mel Gibson is headed back to his television roots for his next gig.

The Oscar (and Golden Raspberry Award) winner has been tapped to star in “The Continental,” described as the prequel to Keanu Reeves’ blockbuster “John Wick” film series.

Exploring the origin behind the titular hotel-for-international assassins from the “John Wick” universe, “The Continental” will be presented as a three-night special-event TV series produced for Starz by Lionsgate Television, according to Deadline.

Set 40 years before the events of the film series, the project will center on the young version of Winston Scott, who is pulled back into a world of his past and takes on a harrowing attempt to seize control of the property.

Gibson will reportedly play a character named Cormac. Other details are not known.

“The Continental” marks the “Lethal Weapon” star’s first small screen role since 2004′s “Complete Savages,” where he appeared as a police officer who appears in safety videos. Gibson executive produced the ABC sitcom, which ran for one season.

The 65-year-old Peekskill, New York, native made his acting debut on the Australian television drama series “The Sullivans” from 1976-1983.

It was during the run of the show Gibson had a career breakthrough with a starring role in the 1979 apocalyptic action film “Mad Max,” which spun off into a blockbuster franchise.

“Menace II Society” director Albert Hughes has been tapped to helm “The Continental,” which has been in development since 2018.
