Mel C joins indie band Blossoms at Glastonbury to cover Spice Girls after hinting reunion

Glastonbury featured a surprise performance by Melanie C this afternoon, after the Spice Girls alum hinted the band might reunite to perform at the festival next year.

The singer, 48, joined the indie pop band - which is fronted by Tom Ogden, 29 - on The Other Stage at the festival on Worthy Farm in Somerset to perform Spice Up Your Life.

Mel C - also known as Sporty Spice - performed the song with the band this afternoon, much to the excitement of the audience who likely weren't expecting the collaboration.

Fans have posted videos of the song on social media, with Mel getting in character as her alter ego Sport Spice.

Attendees report that lead singer Tom told the crowd in the band's set that they wanted to do something a "little bit special" to mark the 50th anniversary of Glastonbury.

He's said to have then introduced Mel C, with the collab seeing her join the indie band to perform Spice Up Your Life - which was released by the Spice Girls back in 1997.

Fans expressed excitement on Twitter, with one person tweeting: "The collaboration we didn't know we needed." Another said that it was "top Glastonbury content."

Talking about the idea with NME prior to their set, Blossoms said they ended up on BBC Radio 2 alongside Mel C recently, where the idea for the collaboration had come up.

Tom recalled that Mel C had told the band that Spice Up Your Life "gets the crowd going a bit more" than songs such as 2 Become 1. He added that the chosen track "suits" them.

Blossoms are best known for tracks including Charlemagne and Blow, both of which are from their chart-topping self-titled debut album, which had been released in 2016.

It's not the first time Mel C performed at the festival this week, with her having played a DJ set at the William's Green stage within the farm location yesterday afternoon.

And Mel said it would be 'the dream' for the Spice Girls to play at Glastonbury next year, adding she has a 'good feeling' band member Victoria Beckham would join them.

She told BBC Breakfast: "It’s the dream, the absolute dream, we would love to do it.

"The girls and I, we have chatted about it, it’s the biggest stage in the world, we have the best festival in the world right here."

She added she has a 'good feeling' that Beckham, known as Posh Spice, would join them for the gig.
