Mel played Amy, a checkout worker at Bettabuy who dated Andy McDonald.

The character later went on to exit Weatherfield for the more exotic climes of Trinidad.

There’s a tragic tale behind Mel B’s casting in Coronation Street. Louise Duprey had originally played Amy Nelson, in 1993, but had to leave the role because of mental health issues.

Before the acting star left Corrie had been planned for her character Amy to marry Andy but instead Mel B, credited as Melanie Brown, was brought to film scenes for Amy’s farewell.

Louise, who had previously appeared in One Foot in The Grave and Bread, took a step back from the limelight after her time in Coronation Street to an end.

Sadly, Louise died at the age of just 43 in February 2000.
