Mel B's amazing leopard-print cake was made by a Spice Girls fan in Bury

Spice Girl Melanie Brown was presented with a huge leopard-print cake on stage last night to celebrate her birthday - and it was made at Whitefield bakery Slattery's.

Scary Spice was celebrating her 44th birthday on the drizzly night at the Etihad Stadium, the first of three shows that the pop stars will perform at the venue.

The enormous four-tier cake was wheeled out by male topless dancers halfway through the show, with Geri Halliwell leading the 63,000-strong crowd in a chorus of Happy Birthday.

"Thank you, I wasn't expecting that," Mel said as she lit the candles and posed for a picture with the cake.

She and Geri were later seen throwing handfuls of it at one another and feeding it to their dancers.

The huge confectionery construction took around 14 hours to complete at Slattery's.

A four-tier Victoria sponge cake was painstakingly hand-painted in a leopard print pattern, then decorated with black feathers, stars, diamantes and miniature glitter balls.

Jessica Fulcher was tasked with the decorating job - and at 27 years old she grew up listening to to the Spice Girls.

"I mean, everyone loves the Spice Girls, surely?" she said. "But yeah, when I was little and dancing around my living room to the Spice Girls, I never would have thought that I'd end up making a cake for Mel B!

"I've been into baking since I was really young, I used to bake with my nan. Then I got the job here [Slattery's] and it was just a dream come true really. Dream job!"

John Slattery, owner of the famed Slattery's Patissier and Chocolatier in Whitefield, said: "It was the event organisers who called us and asked if we could do it. They called on Tuesday morning and wanted it for Wednesday, so it was quite short notice, but we were obviously happy to do it!

"They wanted something they could wheel on and stop on stage, and it obviously had to be something quite big because it's a huge stage and venue.

"It took about 14 hours to make it in total - it's all hand-painted you see. So that time is for the baking, layering, coating it in icing, then you have to let the icing dry overnight.

"Then once it was all dry it was one of our young team members Jess who took over and did the decorating on Wednesday morning. She's very talented - she's a very valued member of our team.

"It was just a sponge cake, with fresh jam and cream! Nothing too elaborate, just a really nice traditional cake."

Although a suitably extravagant creation for one of the biggest pop-stars of all time, something of this scale doesn't come cheap.

To have a similar sized cake, you'd be looking at around £800.
