Mel and Sue share Great British Bake Off 'regret' ahead of new season airing tonight

Former Great British Bake Off hosts Mel Giedroyc and Sue Perkins have revealed their one and only regret since leaving the show after stepping down in 2016.

The pair left when the show announced its move from BBC to Channel 4 and weren't the only ones to jump ship as as Mary Berry also stepped down from the judging panel, leaving Paul Hollywood as the only person to move when the show changed networks.

Prue Leith became the latest judge alongside Hollywood and the new hosts were Noel Fielding and Sandi Toksvig, before she stepped down and Matt Lucas took over.

Speaking to The Times, Sue admitted she hasn't watched Bake Off after she stepped down from presenting the show as it would “would make me sad”.

“We gave it everything we had and we made a decision that was easy to make, but hard sometimes to reflect upon,” she said.

“You just wish it well.”

Mel Giedroyc added: “But also, and I know this sounds disingenuous, but I have only just watched our series.

“I have watched bits and bobs. I am very late to the game. But I haven’t watched The Wire yet, either.”

And Mel and Sue revealed their biggest regret was not having the chance to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the show with Mary Berry.

Sue explained: “I think we would have done 10 years, something like that.

"A 10-year anniversary and then Mary would have maybe gone on to pastures new and we would have left with her.”

“That’s my only regret, that Mary didn’t get her anniversary show,”

Both Sue and Mel agreed and felt saddened that Mary didn't get her anniversary for the show.

Since leaving the show, Mary has gone on to host other BBC shows as well as being on the judging panel for others as well.

Bake Off returns for its 12th series on Channel 4 on tonight at 8pm, and every Tuesday after.
