Meier's two goals lead Sharks over Flyers

SAN JOSE, Calif. _ Timo Meier scored his second goal in dramatic fashion, lifting the San Jose Sharks to victory in overtime.

Meier's goal was his 11th in 14 games, securing a 4-3 Sharks win over the Philadelphia Flyers at SAP Center Saturday.

Logan Couture picked up the assist on Meier's winner, extending his point streak to a career-best nine games.

Joe Thornton tied the game at 3-3 at 15:03 of the third, blasting a shot into the upper shelf on a Sharks rush play. Kevin Labanc earned the primary assist his second point of the night.

Although the Sharks controlled the play throughout the night, the Flyers carried a 3-2 lead late in the third thanks to a trio of Sharks miscues. Nolan Patrick opened the scoring just 37 seconds into the game by sliding behind Justin Braun on a 3-on-2 play. Jordan Weal scored the second goal at 16:40 of the first, using a screen to beat goalie Martin Jones after the Sharks defense left Dale Weise alone in front of the net. Jakub Voracek recorded the third goal with 30 seconds left in the second after the Sharks left him alone in the slot.

Meier scored the Sharks first goal at 3:15 of the first, punching in a feed from Tomas Hertl on the doorstep. In doing so, Meier became just the second player in franchise history to open a season with 10 goals in 14 games, joining Patrick Marleau (2010, 2014). Joe Pavelski recorded his sixth goal on a Sharks power play at 10:35 of the middle frame.

Head coach Pete DeBoer made a major lineup change to start the second, moving Thornton off the top line down to the third line center position.

Hertl left the game with an undisclosed injury in the second period after colliding with Christian Folin in the offensive zone.
