Mehdaayih enters Oaks picture with Chester success

The winner of a two-runner race at Chelmsford City on her reappearance, the John Gosden-trained daughter of Frankel - who is a grand-daughter of Sayyedati, the 1000 Guineas heroine of 1993 - stretched clear under jockey Rab Havlin to beat Manuela De Vega by four and a half lengths.

“She really surprised me how she picked up,” said Havlin, whose mount is on offer at 8-1 with Paddy Power for the Epsom Classic, for which she needs to be supplemented.

“It was only a match race at Chelmsford but the boss said straight away, ‘We’re coming for the Cheshire Oaks.’

“We wanted to find out what level she was at. She showed a really good change of gear and I think she had a bit up her sleeve.”

Gosden was absent from the Roodee but his son and assistant Thady said: “We will discuss it with the owner and see whether he’d want to go to Epsom.”
