Property developer and former Auburn deputy mayor Salim Mehajer is in fresh legal trouble, as he is investigated for assault and threats.

NSW Police told AAP that officers from Auburn Police Command received reports on December 21 that a 31-year-old woman was assaulted and threatened by a man known to her.

A police spokeswoman said on Thursday an investigation was underway and as inquiries were continuing, no further information was available.

Mehajer is due to appear in Bankstown Local Court on January 14 on an apprehended violence order matter.

He is currently in custody after his bail was revoked last month, ahead of a sentencing hearing for perverting the course of justice. The new incidents now under investigation reportedly occurred in October.

Mehajer has had frequent brushes with the law, and spent almost a year in jail in 2018 and 2019 for electoral fraud.
