Meghan would have to give up royal title to run for president

The Duchess of Sussex would have to give up her royal title if she wanted to enter politics and run for president of the USA, an expert has said.

Meghan Markle became Duchess of Sussex when she married Prince Harry.

There are rumours she could run for presidential office in 2024, if Joe Biden decides not to run for a second term.

According to The Article she has expressed a strong interest and meets all the requirements - having never renounced her US citizenship.

But royal commentator Victoria Arbiter told 7News not giving up the title would "conflict" with an oath Meghan would need to take to hold a public office.

She said: "US constitutional experts say that were she to run for president, it would be in direct conflict with her oath for public office."

By tradition, royals also do not get involved in politics.

Ms Arbiter said: "Were she to run, it is more likely she would do so as Meghan Markle than as the Duchess of Sussex."

She added: "Meghan has made no secret of her interest in politics. Last year, she did use her platform to encourage people to use their right to vote. She has spoken about social justice, racial justice and rights for women."

Meghan could end up running against former President Donald Trump - who says he is 'not a fan' of the Duchess.

According to Newsweek Betfred is offering odds of 200-1 on Meghan becoming the next president.

A senior figure in the Labour Party with links to the Democrats in the USA told the Mail on Sunday Meghan is working towards building a Presidential election vcampaign.
