Palace gave Meghan Markle strict rules on Suits - and made writers change script

Before her relationship with Prince Harry became public knowledge, Meghan Markle starred as Rachel Zane in hit legal drama, 'Suits'.

After their romance was revealed, there were reportedly a number of rules introduced by the palace and royal courtiers which limited what the writers could include in the show.

In Tom Bower's explosive new book 'Revenge: Meghan, Harry and the War between the Windsors', he has unpicked the truth behind the couple by speaking to 80 people who know Harry and Meghan.

Countless earth-shattering claims have been made by the author, from how Meghan failed to get on with Harry's friends to the various warnings the pair received about their relationship.

One of the most interesting, however, is how the palace enforced a number of changes and restrictions to Meghan and the writers of 'Suits' after details of her relationship with Prince Harry came to light.

Tom Bower wrote: "Fearing the worst, from bitter experience, the Palace stepped in to control Meghan’s life. Aaron Korsh was told to submit all future Suits scripts to Nick Collins, Meghan’s agent.

"Scripts were thereafter forwarded to Kensington Palace for approval. Orders for changes of words were sent back from London to Los Angeles.

"The most important demand concerned Meghan’s last scene at her ‘wedding’ to Mike. No photographs, the Palace ordered, were to be shot of Meghan wearing a wedding dress.

"Between filming, she was always to wear a jacket over the dress. The atmosphere in the studio changed.

"Some actors and staff discovered that Meghan’s attitude occasionally stiffened. Sometimes she arrived late and her empathy occasionally morphed into near-arrogance.

"Meghan had markedly shifted from the early days when she held a prayer meeting with the Suits cast before filming started.

"Tongue-in-cheek, the Suits scriptwriters took a licence with Zane’s final words before she says, ‘I do.’

"Thinking of Harry, Meghan delivered the lines to her on-stage husband Mike, ‘You are the strongest man I have ever met and you make me stronger . . . you’re the husband I’ve always wanted and I can’t wait to start our adventure together.’"

Elsewhere in the book, Bower revealed how Meghan and Harry both received warnings from friends and family over their budding relationship.

He wrote that Meghan's former talent agent, Gina Nelthorpe-Cowne, told the actress she "wouldn't be able to make any more movies" with her priority set to become royal life instead.

But Meghan wasn't impressed, claims Bower, writing: "Gina, save it,’ Meghan snapped. Nelthorpe-Cowne was taken aback by the steel in Meghan’s voice.

"Holding up her hand, Meghan continued: ‘Stop. Be quiet. I don’t want to hear any negativity. This is a happy time for us.’ Stopped in her tracks, Nelthorpe-Cowne looked at the hard fury in Meghan’s eyes."

It seems Prince Harry was also issued a warning from his uncle and Diana, Princess of Wales's brother, Earl Spencer. Bower wrote: "At William’s request, Spencer weighed in.

"Three times married, Spencer cautioned his nephew to reconsider his haste towards marriage. His advice provoked a bitter reaction. ‘This was going to be really hard,’ Harry would later reflect on establishing Meghan’s place in the family."
