Meghan Markle wears $356 straw hat for conversation with Gloria Steinem about voting

Meghan Markle wore a $356 straw hat for her recent backyard conversation with Gloria Steinem to discuss the importance of voting ahead of the US presidential election.

A preview of the conversation between the Duchess of Sussex and the feminist icon was shared Tuesday by Makers Women, a media brand that “accelerates the women’s movement”.

In the black-and-white clip, the duchess can be seen sitting outside at a wooden table across from Steinem.

For the occasion, Meghan chose a pair of $249 white striped pants by Anine Bing, which she paired with a simple white T-shirt, according to Marie Claire, while Steinem opted for an all-black outfit and aviator sunglasses.

The duchess accessorised her look with a pair of black Stella McCartney sandals and a wide-brim straw hat by Janessa Leone, which features a felt ribbon with chin strap and retails for $356.

On social media, viewers praised Meghan’s hat, with one person commenting: “This hat is EVERYTHING.”

Another said: “Meghan legit surprised me with that video… the joy, the dogs, the HAT. We don’t deserve!!”

Following the release of the clip, the hat brand announced on Instagram that it would be donating 10 per cent of proceeds on all orders made online through Sunday to the public awareness campaign I Am A Voter.

“Meghan Markle wearing SERENA in discussion about the importance of Voting with fellow Women's Rights activist Gloria Steinem,” the brand wrote on Instagram. “In honour of this important conversation, we will be donating 10 per cent of proceeds on all orders made online through Sunday to @iamavoter, a nonpartisan movement that aims to create a cultural shift around voting and civic engagement.”

The accessories brand, which is based in Los Angeles, also said the Serena hat worn by the duchess is available for pre-order now.

During the conversation, which is set to be released in full Wednesday, the pair discussed Steinem's life's work on behalf of women's rights and the importance of voting.

“People forget how hard women like you and so many others before you fought for us to just be where we are right now,” the duchess said, to which Steinem replied: “If you don’t vote, you don’t exist.”
