Meghan Markle was 'absolutely fascinated' by matriarchal leadership of elephants during documentary

Meghan Markle was "absolutely fascinated" by the matriarchal leadership in elephants when she was recording her voiceover, it's claimed.

The Duchess of Sussex, 38, narrated Disneynature documentary 'Elephants' in her first job since stepping down as a senior royal.

Filmmakers Mark Linfield and Vanessa Berlowitz said Meghan "related' to the way female elephants lead the pack, particularly because she's become a mother herself to baby Archie.

She met Mark Linfield and Vanessa Berlowitz over lunch during a trip to Botswana where the trio discussed the project.

Vanessa told People magazine: "She was absolutely intrigued by the elephants and transfixed, especially by the female empowerment side.

"How important the matriarchs are to the story; it really is all about female leadership.

"It’s a different form of power — it’s about consensual leadership. It’s also very inclusive, as well — very contemporary. She was absolutely fascinated by that."

The documentary follows follows a herd of pachyderm elephants 1,000 miles across the Kalahari Desert in search of water.

Vanessa added: "You could totally tell she was identifying with [elephants] Shani and Jojo, and keeping little ones in tow.

"She felt like a normal mom going through the normal trials and tribulations of bringing up a baby. Like one of us."

Disneynature's Elephant hits screens on Disney Plus today.

Family bonds is a key theme throughout, with Meghan saying: "The emotional bond between elephants are as strong and long-lasting as our own."

But Meghan's performance has received mixed reviews from critics.

The majority of reviewers have awarded it two or three stars out of five, with Meghan being branded 'over-eager to please' and 'cheesy'.
