Meghan Markle silenced pals with 'royal first' at royal wedding - 'you could hear pin drop'

Meghan Markle reportedly made a subtle dig at life within the royal family during a speech to guests on her wedding day.

The Duchess of Sussex is said to have made a comment about the royal life she was about to embark on, in front of her new family at her wedding to Prince Harry in 2018.

In their unofficial biography, Finding Freedom, Omid Scobie and Carolyn Durand highlighted how Meghan hadn’t spoken in public before their big day.

According to the authors of the book, it was a "first for a royal bride" and reinforced the notion that she is "no typical duchess."

They wrote: "A first for a royal bride, the move reinforced the idea that this American was no typical duchess.

"'You could literally hear a pin drop', said a close confidant, who described the speech as a momentous occasion even for the Americans.

"'For her to have been quiet for as long as she had, and then have this really safe space where she could give these heartfelt remarks, it was a really special moment', the source said.

"'She spent so many years, whether on campus, on TV, or advocating for women to be empowered, speaking out. And she's respected that.

"'She does have a lot of respect for the family and the institution that she has joined. Bit it's just a different way of living. We'd missed hearing her speak'.

"And apparently Meghan felt the same way, because she laughed, 'I know it's been a while'."

During her speech, the new Duchess of Sussex thanked the Queen for welcoming her into the family with open arms and Prince Charles for stepping in at the last minute and walking her down the aisle.

According to Us Weekly, it was also believed that she made reference to her divorce from Trevor Engelson, and affirmed that finding love was "worth the wait". She went on to brand Prince Harry as "the one".

As time went on, Meghan settled into her role in the royal family and got used to the expectation to remain quiet.

However, it has reportedly been difficult for her to adapt, as an insider claimed she was heard muttering "don't I have a voice" during an engagement with the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge.
