Meghan Markle 'saddened' by need for Social Media Kindness Day

The Duchess of Sussex has lent her support to the upcoming Social Media Kindness Day, which was created in honour of TV presenter Caroline Flack, who died by suicide in February.

Social Media Kindness Day will take place on Monday 9 November to coincide with what would have been Flack’s 41st birthday.

“It is through her message of being kind that this day is connected to her,” the event’s website reads.

"We are wanting it to be a movement, not just for a day but for generations to come - where unkindness isn't tolerated.

“Social media should be a place where people can socialise, network, do business and live 'their best life' without fear of negativity.”

Now, Meghan has showed her support for the day by explaining she is “saddened” that such an event is even neccessary.

“For so many, social media plays a big part of their daily life," she said in a statement.

“We have access to it at the ends of our fingertips, so it ought to be a safer and kinder place for all.

“It saddens me that in today’s society Social Media Kindness Day is deemed necessary. But it absolutely is!

“I sincerely hope this much needed awareness day is a success. I fully support the initiative.”

Meghan has been outspoken about her own experiences with social media trolling in recent months.

In October, the Duchess said she was the "most trolled person in the world" last year during a mental health podcast with Prince Harry.

She made the comment in an interview for the Teenager Therapy podcast, in which Meghan described the online abuse she'd received as "unsurvivable".
