Now the history-making photo is being celebrated and hailed as symbolic of multicultural Britain.

It marks the first time in royal history that a British monarch has been pictured alongside a royal baby ’s black grandmother.

Journalist Stig Abell tweeted: "I have a mixed race family, and this image is beautiful, important and inspiring. So I shall park my cynicism for once."

The snap also encapsulates two women of contrasting upbringings and life experiences coming together - The Queen, who was born into royalty and does not know a different life.

Archie, seventh in line to the throne, is also the first biracial half-American and half-British member of the Royal Family.

His heritage has been described as "monumental” by Tessy Ojo, chief executive of the Diana Award, the charity established in honor of Princess Diana.

She told PEOPLE magazine: “Like Harry and Meghan’s wedding, it changes the landscape in terms of bringing visibility around race and inclusion."

Patrick Vernon OBE, a prominent campaigner during the UK’s Windrush scandal, also described the photo as reflecting the royal family’s embrace of “modernity”.

He told HuffPost UK: “The presence of the mother is significantly important as it reminds the public and the royal family there is black in the Union Jack.

“Britain is a multicultural and secular society - and Meghan and Harry reflect a new modernity to the royal family.

“When people write the history books in the future...historians cannot erase us from the history of Britain again. Like all black mothers, she’ll play an important role in nurturing and giving her grandson a sense of identity and empowerment.”

Royal baby: The Queen and Prince Philip look thrilled to meet little Archie

Meghan's mum will no doubt play a huge role in Archie's life and instill some of the important life lessons she gave the Duchess.

The 37-year-old former actress has previously heaped praise on the way Doria, a former air hostess and makeup artist, brought her up to be a 'global citizen.'

Writing on her now defunct blog, The Tig, Meghan said: "My mother raised me to be a global citizen, with eyes open to sometimes harsh realities.

"I must have been about ten years old when we visited the slums of Jamaica. I had never seen poverty at that level and it registered in my glazed brown eyes. 'Don’t look scared, Flower,' she said. 'Be aware, but don’t be afraid'".

Meghan continued: "Both my parents came from little, so they made a choice to give a lot – buying turkeys for homeless shelters at Thanksgiving, delivering meals to patients in hospice care, donating any spare change in their pocket to those asking for it, and performing quiet acts of grace – be it a hug, a smile, or a pat on the back to show ones in need that they would be alright.

"This is what I grew up seeing, so that is what I grew up being: a young adult with a social consciousness to do what I could, and to, at the very least, speak up when I knew something was wrong."

Royal Family's official website makes epic gaffe in baby name announcement

Meghan and Harry have also been keen to mention Doria in each baby announcement - which some may see as a snub to Meghan's father Thomas Markle.

The 74-year-old hasn't been referred to at all and a friend admitted he found out Meghan had given birth through the media.

In the initial birth announcement it said: "The Duchess’s mother, Doria Ragland, who is overjoyed by the arrival of her first grandchild, is with Their Royal Highnesses at Frogmore Cottage ."

And this evening when the photograph of Doria with Meghan, Harry, Philip and The Queen was shared it made special mention to Doria: "This afternoon Their Royal Highnesses introduced Her Majesty The Queen to her eighth great-grandchild at Windsor Castle.

"The Duke of Edinburgh and The Duchess’ mother were also present for this special occasion."
