Meghan Markle's 'mommy' interrupts her podcast and reveals their secret handshake

Meghan Markle's mum Doria interrupts her latest podcast and lets slip of their secret mother-daughter handshake she came up with for them.

In the latest episode of her podcast Archetypes, Meghan discusses the "pressures of what it means to be a partner and a parent in this modern age" alongside Canada's first lady Sophie Grégoire Trudeau, the wife of Justin Trudeau, actress Pamela Adlon and comedian Sam Jay.

Just before her chat with comedian and writer Sam, Meghan can be heard taking an unexpected FaceTime call from Doria - and their sweet exchange can be heard, including their secret greeting.

Meghan says: "My mom's FaceTiming, me, 'hey, mommy'.

Doris replies: "Hey, how's my girl, to which Meghan says: "I'm okay. I'm hanging in there. It's okay, I'm recording right now. Do you want to see?

"We're just doing some podcasting. Can I call you back in a little bit?"

Doria then asks: "Do you have on a smiley face?"

And Meghan replies: "I have on a smiley face" before they exchange some clicking noises.

She explains: "You may have heard this clicking sound that she was doing.

"All right, gang, my mom literally just pulled out a reference of what I came up with as a cool handshake to do with her when I was about eight, which was snap scissors, cut chicken.

"I'm 41 years old. And she's like, 'okay'.

"It just put me right back into the past thinking about my childhood and our little quirks together.

And then with this episode on my brain, it got me thinking about all the ways my mom supported me, how she took care of me and the house and herself and how she just juggled so much.

"The amount that women carry, that they navigate, it's immense and it's often the most thankless unpaid labour.

"There's no union, there's no lunch break. There's nothing like that at home. Women just work really, really hard."

Meanwhile, also in the podcast, Meghan revealed she found studying for the British citizenship exam "so hard" and claimed even Harry had "no idea" of some of the answers.

And she also detailed her morning routine with her children Archie and Lilibet, describing it as a "whirlwind".

Meghan and Harry signed a lucrative deal with the audio streaming giant Spotify to host and produce podcasts, estimated to be worth around £18 million, in late 2020.

Archetypes was launched with the aim of investigating "labels that try to hold women back" through conversations between Meghan and historians, experts and women who have experienced being typecast.
