Meghan Markle's baby shower fundraiser reaches £20,000 as fans rush to donate

Meghan Markle's fans have raised thousands of pounds for charities close to the mum-to-be's heart as part of an unofficial viral baby shower .

People around the world have been donating money and time to WellChild, Camfed and animal charity Mayhew in honour of Baby Sussex.

Using the hashtag #GlobalSussexBabyShower, people have given more than £20,000 to the causes in just one day.

All three of the charities have been overwhelmed and a spokesperson for one said they were "floored" by the number of donations.

This afternoon, Camfed told Mirror Online it has received 566 donations totalling more than £14,030.

Staff at the Camfed, the Campaign for Female Education, posted on Twitter thanking people who had got involved.

"Ok all you amazing, warm-hearted & generous people.

"You completely floored us today when you started sending your support & donations in response to @freepeeper's #GlobalSussexBabyShower campaign. You've made our year!"

WellChild , a national charity which looks after sick children, has had £2,300 from 130 donations.

CEO Colin Dyer said: "We have been surprised and delighted by the donations from supporters of Global Sussex Baby Shower.

"It's great that an online outpouring of goodwill can lead to practical help for children with serious illness and their families."

Staff at Mayhew also took to social media to thank people for their kind donations.

At their latest count on Monday morning they had 223 donations totalling £4,100.

They posted: "We're incredibly touched by the generosity of everyone who joined the Global Sussex Baby Shower this weekend! THANK YOU to everyone who donated and showed their support, you are amazing!"

The fundraiser came about on Twitter after fan account Baby Sussex's Au Pair tweeted the idea.

Some people have got involved in different ways, by either donating items to good causes or pledging to volunteer at charity and organisations.

One fan wrote: "Felt so happy making my 2 donations this morning. And so proud to be part of this awesome # SussexSquad community! # GlobalSussexBabyShower. I'm confident the Sussexes will find out about this show of support and unity. They know they're loved!

Another added: "Love seeing all the positivity on my timeline. Donated to Camfed. You are wonderful for putting this together."

One woman posted: "I am feeling the love and hope the Duke and Duchess are too! I have added to my donations to WellChild and St. Jude’s in the US!"

Meghan and Prince Harry are due to welcome their first child this month , although her exact due date is not yet know.
