Meghan Markle has been singled out from the start. Ever since news of her relationship with Prince Harry became public she’s been the subject of intense scrutiny from people both outside and within the royal family.
Certain figures within the palace were suspicious of the future Duchess of Sussex and according to royal biographer and commentator Phil Dampier, Prince William was one of the first to express skepticism regarding Meghan’s intentions with his little brother.
Speaking to The Sun Dampier referred to the late Queen Elizabeth’s cousin, Lady Elizabeth Anson’s comments who claimed many in the firm were wary of Meghan’s intentions. Dampier used Anson’s comments to back up his own theory that Harry’s wife never intended to stay in the royal family.
“I think, unfortunately, that confirms what I’ve been saying or thought for the last few years that, sadly, Meghan never really had any intention of staying in the royal family.”
Dampier goes on to say that Meghan saw Harry as a stepping stone and “that’s what initially Prince William was concerned about.”
Prince William was suspicious of Meghan Markle from the start
Dampier speculates that William’s suspicions led to a falling out between him and the Sussexes. The relationship between the future King and his little brother has been on a continuous downward slope pretty much since Harry and Meghan’s relationship started. Currently it looks as though William has absolutely no intention of reconciling with his brother, could it be because he tried to warn Harry years ago only to be shrugged off?
William wasn’t the only one who was skeptical of Meghan. Lady Anson’s comments suggest that many in the upper echelons of the royal family held negative opinions of Harry’s soon-to-be-wife including the Queen at the time. Queen Elizabeth had suspected Meghan of engineering her whole romance with Harry in order to further her own image.
Distrust towards the Duchess of Sussex runs deep
Anson’s comments reveal that both William and Elizabeth were concerned about Meghan’s intentions long before they let on. While the firm rarely discusses such matters in public it’s rather eye-opening to find out that senior royals thought so lowly of Meghan almost right from the start. It seems many believed Harry to be under Meghan’s thumb even back in 2018.
Dampier claims that Lady Anson’s comments can be trusted as “she was speaking to the Queen on a regular basis right up until her death… we can trust this information.” The fact that Meghan ultimately did end up leaving the royal family along with Harry less than two years after their wedding also backs up the claim that she never intended to stay within the family.
