Meghan Markle makes sustainable statement with her fashion choices in South Africa

Meghan Markle has used the first few days of the royal visit to South Africa to demonstrate her sustainable style credentials.

Wearing a mixture of recycled pieces and showcasing ethically-minded brands, the Duchess of Sussex chosen her wardrobe carefully.

Stepping out today in Cape Town, Meghan opted for a laidback double denim ensemble, which consisted of previously worn Madewell denim jacket last seen on the duchess in 2017, with a canvas bag and jeans also thought to be from the brand.

To complete the outfit, Meghan opted to wear a pair of Brother Vellies Huaraches Flats on her feet, which retail for £156, but are currently sold out.

Brother Vellies is a New-York based brand which creates its products using local artisans within Africa. All of the brand's shoes are handmade in South Africa, Ethiopia, Kenya and Morocco and are made using methods passed down from generation to generation.

Recycling is a recurring theme so far on this tour. Last night, for a visit to the District Six museum and Homecoming centre, Meghan stepped out in a blue shirt dress by Veronica Beard, which she previously during the early stages of her pregnancy in Tonga during last year’s royal tour of the Pacific.

The outfit change came after Meghan’s first appearance in South Africa yesterday, for which she donned a wrap dress by brand Mayamiko. The black and white printed piece had been ethically made by from locally-sourced 100 per cent cotton in Malawi.

Just two days in, it’s becoming clear that Meghan is using her sartorial choices to make a statement about her commitment to sustainability.
