Meghan Markle has 'that personality' to run for US president, her brother says

The half-brother of Meghan Markle says his estranged sister has the 'determination and drive' to run for president and would 'do good things'.

There had been speculation earlier this year about a potential bid for the US top seat in 2024.

In a column in August Tom Bower, who is writing a royal biography about the Duchess of Sussex, said he believes the former actress' next steps are to conquer the US - and then the world.

He asked: "And what about the next 40 years? Once Harry has finished promoting his books, will Meghan launch her own global campaign to engage in the swirling muck of American politics?"

Now, Thomas Markle Jr, Meghan's estranged half-brother, has added fuel to the speculation about a forthcoming bid.

He told Australia's New Idea magazine that she could be eyeing a move for the White House in the future.

He said: "She obviously has that personality and that determination and drive... it wouldn't surprise me.

"I just know, whatever endeavour she endures and puts her hands on, she will do good things. I wish her the best of luck, but absolutely if that's what she's going to put her sights on, she'll go for it."

He added that Meghan had always gone after her dreams when she was growing up.

During the US election in 2020, Meghan urged voters to "reject hate speech", seen as a direct criticism of the disgraced former president Donald Trump, who said he was "not a fan" of Meghan.

A friend of the Duchess told Vanity Fair magazine last year that a reason she did not give up her American citizenship when she married Prince Harry was to keep open the option of entering US politics.

US constitutional experts say she would have to renounce her title if she wanted to hold public office in because it would conflict with the US oath of allegiance.

The source added it was assumed she was looking to run in 2024, when President Joe Biden will be 82 and deciding whether he wants to run for a second term.

Her friends have previously encouraged Meghan's political ambitions, describing her rise to stardom as "the embodiment of the American dream."
