Meghan Markle divides opinion after introducing herself with royal title to children

Meghan Markle has divided opinion by introducing herself with her royal title in a reading to children.

The former actress appeared in a video to read aloud her kids book The Bench, filmed for Brightly Storytime.

Meghan began by introducing herself by saying "I am Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex."

She then went on to read her popular story while showing viewers the illustrations.

But the use of her title at the start has divided opinion.

In the video, Meghan said: "Hi and welcome to Brightly Storytime.

"I am Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex, and today I am going to read you my book called The Bench.

"This is illustrated by Christian Robinson and I asked him to do something special for me and use watercolours, which isn't the normal medium he works with but he did it to make this extra special.

"I hope you love the pictures as much as you love the words.

"I wrote this as a poem for my husband and our son, Archie and then turned it into a book so you can enjoy it too."

One commenting on a tweet with a news piece about Meghan's reading of The Bench wrote: "And of course she introduces herself as the duchess of sussex. She won't let the title go will she?"

Another said: "Have either Catherine or Sophie ever done that? Like, Hey, I’m Catherine/Sophie, The Duchess of Cambridge/Countess of Wessex?"

"And introduces herself as Meghan the Duchess of Sussex. Like kids have a clue who she is...Wow," one tweeted.

But many fans thought it made sense for her to introduce herself with her title.

One, defending Meghan, said: "Not being working members doesn’t mean they aren’t royal.

"They are still very much royals, Harry is still a prince by blood and Meghan a princess and duchess by marriage."

Another made the point: "It’s literally their name."

Many also commended the reading itself: "She did such a wonderful job with the reading. Relaxing tone and perfect pace and balance."
