Meghan Markle claims she couldn't even talk to Oprah without Royal staff being present

Meghan Markle has claimed that she wasn't even allowed to talk to Oprah Winfrey without Royal staff present when the chat show queen previously asked her for an interview.

The Duchess of Sussex and her Duke husband Prince Harry have sat down for an explosive chat with Oprah after stepping back from the Royal family and relocating from the UK to America.

In a new clip from the bombshell interview, set to the aired in the UK on Monday, Oprah reveals she originally contacted Meghan in 2018 to ask her for an interview.

And Meghan, who married Harry later that year, claimed that she wasn't able to make her own choices at the time, but now feels liberated.

In a new clip released today, Oprah says: "So I just want to say that I called you, maybe the February or March before the wedding, asking 'Would you please give me an interview?'

"And you said, 'I'm sorry it's not the right time'. And finally we get to sit down and have this conversation."

Meghan responded: "I remember that conversation very well. I wasn't even allowed to have that conversation with you personally right? People from the comms had to be sitting there..."

Oprah jumped in: "Yeah there were other people in the room when I was having that conversation.

"You turned me down nicely and said, 'Perhaps there will be another time, when there's the right time'. What is right about this time?"

Meghan tells her: "Um, well so many things, um, that we're on the other side of a lot of life experience that's happened and also that we have the ability to make our own choices in a way that I couldn't have said yes to you then, that wasn't my choice to make.

Meghan and Harry agreed to do a tell-all interview with Oprah (CBS)

"So as an adult who lived a really independent life to go into this construct that is different than I think what people imagine it to be, it's really liberating to be able to have the right and the privilege in some ways to be able to say yes, and I'm ready to talk."

Oprah asked if Meghan meant that she didn't have to consult with anyone else at this point.

Meghan said: "Yeah, to be able to just make a choice on your own and to be able to speak for yourself."

Meghan and Harry moved to California with their son Archie, one, and are now expecting another child together after suffering a tragic miscarriage last year.

Harry also recently appeared on The Late Late Show with James Corden, reportedly upsetting Oprah by giving away a big exclusive she had landed in her interview.

A representative for the Palace did not want to comment when contacted by the Mirror.
