Meghan Markle and Prince Harry's touching nod to Diana in birth announcement

When a royal baby makes their entrance into the world there's certain protocol in place.

While Prince Harry and Meghan Markle broke with tradition in many ways with how they broke the news, some aspects of their announcement followed tradition.

Namely, which family members were told  - and in which order.

The palace's statement read:

"The Queen, The Duke of Edinburgh, The Prince of Wales, The Duchess of Cornwall, The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, Lady Jane Fellowes, Lady Sarah McCorquodale and Earl Spencer have been informed and are delighted with the news.

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry's 'clue' that Baby Sussex is a boy - even though signs pointed to a girl

"The Duchess’s mother, Doria Ragland, who is overjoyed by the arrival of her first grandchild, is with Their Royal Highnesses at Frogmore Cottage . "

There was no mention of whether Meghan's dad, Thomas Markle had been informed of his grandson's birth .

Aside from this, all the usual suspects were named - including some additional family members.

What was different about Baby Sussex's birth announcement was the inclusion of Princess Diana's family.

William and Harry's aunts and uncle were all named - which was wasn't the case with the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge's children.

Instead, the Cambridges opted for the wording: "The Queen, The Duke of Edinburgh, The Prince of Wales, The Duchess of Cornwall, Prince Harry and members of both families have been informed and are delighted with the news."

It's a sweet nod from Harry and Meghan to the late Princess of Wales and her family.

Prince William has previously spoken of his sadness at his mother not being around.

He was quoted as saying: "We've got more photos up round the house now of her and we talk about her a bit and stuff.

"It's hard, because obviously Catherine didn't know her, so she cannot really provide that, that level of detail.

"So, I do regularly when putting George or Charlotte to bed, talk about her and just try and remind them that there are two grandmothers -there were two grandmothers - in their lives.

"So, it's important that they know who she was and that she existed.

"She'd be a nightmare grandmother - absolute nightmare. She'd love the children to bits, but she'd be an absolute nightmare," he added.

"She'd come and go and she'd come in probably at bath time, cause an amazing amount of scene, bubbles everywhere, bathwater all over the place, and then leave."
