Meghan Markle and Prince Harry Oprah interview to be broadcast on same day as Queen's TV address

The Queen's annual Commonwealth address is due to be broadcast on the same day as Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's much-anticipated Oprah interview.

The monarch is due to share her annual message in A Celebration For Commonwealth Day, which will be broadcast on Sunday, March 7 on BBC One - the same day as the Sussexes' interview with Oprah Winfrey.

The TV spot will replace the annual Commonwealth Day service, due to take place on Monday (March 8) and usually attended by the Queen and members of the royal family, which will not go ahead due to the pandemic, Westminster Abbey has said.

The Prince of Wales, the Duchess of Cornwall, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and the Countess of Wessex will also take part in the programme, the Abbey said.

However, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex will not be appearing after announcing last week that they would not be returning as working royals.

Instead, they will be appearing on screens across the world for their exclusive interview with US chat show host Oprah Winfrey.

The much discussed TV appearance, 'Oprah With Meghan And Harry: A CBS Primetime Special', will be aired on March 7 in the US, while a British broadcast is still yet to be announced.

It is expected that the pair will address their lives since stepping down as working royals in March last year and their new life in LA.

Commonwealth Day (formerly Empire Day) is the annual celebration of the Commonwealth of Nations, often held on the second Monday in March.

It is marked by an Anglican service in Westminster Abbey, normally attended by Queen Elizabeth II as Head of the Commonwealth along with the Commonwealth Secretary-General and Commonwealth High Commissioners in London.

Commonwealth Day is a public holiday in some parts of the Commonwealth, but not presently in Britain.
