Meghan Markle and Prince Harry made 'cynical' name choice for daughter, writer claims

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry made a "cynical" name choice for their baby, a writer has claimed.

The Duchess of Sussex gave birth to a 7lb 11oz daughter, Lilibet “Lili” Diana Mountbatten-Windsor, on June 4 in California.

Columnist Sarah Vine thinks the name Lilibet is "odd" because it is the Queen's nickname - and says she would have expected the baby's to be named just Diana.

The Sussexes named their daughter in tribute to both the Queen - who was called Lilibet during her childhood and also by her late husband Prince Philip - and Harry's mum Diana, who was killed in a car crash in 1997.

But the newspaper columnist told the Palace Confidential podcast that some of her readers have contacted her to express their disappointment at the name choice despite the couple's rift with the Royal Family, the Express reports.

She said: "I was really surprised. I expected them to have Diana, as Diana is so important to Harry, but I did think Lilibet was very odd.

"It is the Queen’s nickname - it isn’t even a proper name really - and it just seems such an intimate nickname as well.

"She was called it by her uncle, grandfather or father because she couldn’t pronounce her own name and Prince Philip used it for her.

"I honestly think it feels quite cynical. I’m sorry, I just really think it felt quite cynical."

Meghan gave birth to a 7lb 11oz daughter, Lilibet “Lili” Diana Mountbatten-Windsor, on June 4 in California.

A statement from the couple's press secretary said: "It is with great joy that Prince Harry and Meghan, The Duke and Duchess of Sussex, welcome their daughter, Lilibet "Lili" Diana Mountbatten-Windsor, to the world.

"Lili was born on Friday, June 4 at 11.40am in the trusted care of the doctors and staff at Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital in Santa Barbara, California.

"She weighed 7lbs 11oz. Both mother and child are healthy and well, and settling in at home.

"Lili is named after her great-grandmother, Her Majesty The Queen, whose family nickname is Lilibet.

"Her middle name, Diana, was chosen to honour her beloved late grandmother, The Princess of Wales.

"This is the second child for the couple, who also have a two-year-old son named Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor.

"The Duke and Duchess thank you for your warm wishes and prayers as they enjoy this special time as a family."

Harry reportedly introduced his newborn to the Queen via video call after returning home from hospital.

Kate Middleton last week said she had not seen her niece yet, but told reporters she wishes her all the best and added she cannot wait to meet her.

Baby Lilibet is eighth in line to the throne, while her brother Archie is seventh in line.

The first seven places remain unchanged - the Prince of Wales, the Duke of Cambridge, Prince George, Princess Charlotte, Prince Louis, Harry, and Archie Mountbatten-Windsor.
