Meghan Markle and Prince Harry hire Oscar-nominated producer for Netflix deal

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have hired a producer nominated for five awards at this year's Oscars to help them create Spotify and Netflix shows.

Ben Browning has been chosen as head of content for the Duke and Duchess of Sussex's charity arms Archewell Productions and Archewell Audio

The former FilmNation production president produced Promising Young Women, which is nominated for Best Picture at the Academy Awards.

Mr Browning has also worked on projects including Late Night, The Big Sick, Arrival and Room.

In a statement to Forbes, he said: “From the moment they shared their vision for Archewell as a global production company that will spotlight diverse voices and share uplifting stories, I knew I wanted to help with this unique opportunity.

“It’s a thrilling company to be starting.”

The veteran producer and the royals were introduced to one another by a mutual industry contact, the publication reported.

He was convinced to join after a series of meetings between him and Harry and Meghan, in which they expressed their desire to create an entertainment company aimed at a young and global audience.

The announcement comes as it emerged that the director of the foundation has left her role after just a year.

Catherine St-Laurent joined the charity in April 2020, however she is now no longer its leader and has instead taken a purely advisory role at Archewell.

Before being poached by the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, Ms St-Laurent worked for Bill Gates' charitable ventures for eight years.

They said Ms St-Laurent has transitioned to a senior advisory role for Archewell, adding: “She will continue to bring high-level strategic guidance to Archewell, which she helped launch and build over the course of the past year."

Ms St-Laurent is launching her own new social impact firm, supported by and working with Archewell - and she'll be replaced by James Holt, the couple's UK spokesman.

It comes after the Sussexes lost various members of staff during their time in the UK, including Meghan's personal assistant, a senior communications officer and their private secretary.
