Meghan Markle and Prince Harry file to trademark 'Sussex Royal'

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have filed to trademark “Sussex Royal“, the couple’s charitable foundation.

In documents published on the website of the Intellectual Property Office (IPO), it states that the trademark was filed on 21 June and published on 20 December.

The trademark covers a range of “goods and services”, including items such as magazines, calendars, posters, greeting cards and clothing.

It also covers services including charitable fundraising, education and social care initiatives.

In June, it was reported that Meghan and Prince Harry had split from their joint charity with the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge.

The Royal Foundation was renamed the Royal Foundation of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge.

In a statement, the foundation said the decision for the couples to develop their own foundations was made to “better align” their charitable activities.

Other documents published on the IPO website show that Catherine and Prince William filed to trademark their royal foundation a few days after the Sussexes.

While the status of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge’s trademark application is “registered”, the status of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s trademark application is currently “application published”.

Shortly after Christmas, the Duchess of Cambridge published an open letter praising the work UK midwives do for women “behind the scenes”.

In honour of International Year of the Nurse and Midwife, which takes place in 2020, the duchess wrote about ”the humbling work” of midwives, recalling a trip she made to Kingston Hospital’s Maternity Unit in November.

“You are there for women at their most vulnerable; you witness strength, pain and unimaginable joy on a daily basis,” the royal stated.
