Meghan Markle’s first official royal patronage has been revealed accidentally as the National Theatre shared the news on its website before quickly deleting it.

The Duchess of Sussex was confirmed as the new patron of the theatre in what is thought to be an IT gaffe as the news was posted on the site in an article dated a day ahead of time.

A screenshot shared on Twitter showed a photograph of a smiling Meghan above a message, dated January 10, which said: "The Duchess of Sussex announced as our new Royal Patron."

The National Theatre declined to comment on the post, which comes amid rumours its artistic director Rufus Norris had held private meetings with the duchess.

Kensington Palace later formally announced that the Duchess of Sussex had become patron of four organisations, the National Theatre, the Association of Commonwealth Universities, Smart Works and Mayhew.

It is Meghan’s first patronage since she became a member of the royal family by marrying Prince Harry last year.

The patronage, which is currently held by the Queen, is likely to suit the duchess, who was previously an actress.

The couple are expecting their first child in the spring.
