Meghan called the Queen to check on Philip after he was admitted to hospital

Meghan Markle has told Oprah Winfrey that she called the Queen when she heard about Prince Philip's hospital admission almost three weeks ago.

The 39-year-old had been revealing all in an explosive interview with the American presenter alongside her husband Prince Harry.

She said that she contacted the Queen to ask about the 99-year-old's health.

"This morning, I woke up earlier than H, and saw a note from someone on our team in the UK saying that the Duke of Edinburgh had gone to the hospital. But I just picked up the phone and I called the Queen just to check in," she told Oprah.

It comes after sources had earlier reported that the Duke of Sussex had been asked to come home to visit his grandfather in hospital.

On Wednesday the Duke of Edinburgh underwent a successful procedure for a pre-existing heart condition at St Bartholomew's Hospital in the City of London.

He has since been moved back to the private King Edward VII's Hospital for continuing treatment, according to Buckingham Palace.

Before the hugely anticipated Oprah interview aired stateside, royal expert Katie Nicholl told Entertainment Tonight that the royals were "much more concerned with the more serious matter which is the health of the Duke of Edinburgh who is seriously ill in hospital."

The duke's latest need for hospital treatment is his longest to date as he was hospitalised for 17 days.

While certain members of the institution received criticism by the Duchess of Sussex in her interview, the former Suits star was full of praise for the Queen and her treatment towards her.

She claimed the Queen was always "wonderful to her" and reminded her of her own grandmother.

However, she also claimed that she was "silenced" by the royal family after her marriage to Harry and was the victim of "character assassination".

Meghan officially joined the royal family in 2018 following her lavish wedding to Harry at St George's Chapel at Windsor Castle.
