Meghan and Harry's baby news is joyful - people need to be happy and get over it

At a time when there is so much sadness and bad news around, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s baby announcement was beautifully timed and wonderfully uplifting.

I know the picture the couple released telling the world Archie is going to be a big brother could have come straight off the set of a Hollywood movie, but who cares, let them have fun with it.

If Covid has taught us anything, it’s that life is fragile and precious - too precious to sit around worry about what people who don’t like you and who criticise you every move think.

Inevitably the critics have been out in force. But then there are some people who will never forgive a mixed-raced actress for “stealing” their beloved Prince Harry. Get over it.

There have been comments saying the photo is cheesy, someone commented that it looked like it had come straight out of a Barbara Cartland novel. Perhaps.

To me though, it beamed pure love and happiness. Meghan wasn’t styled to within an inch of her life. Nor was Harry suited and booted.

Their expressions said ‘this is our world, this is our life and we are all we need’.

Who could begrudge that. Especially after what the couple went through last year - Meghan revealed she’d had a devastating miscarriage.

They’ve been called hypocrites releasing the photograph so soon after winning a privacy case against a national newspaper.

And they’ve vowed not to speak to the biggest selling papers in the country.

But they were going to have to tell the world sometime.

And what ever way they did it they would be panned.

I think it’s wonderful they got to enjoy what looks like the first months of the pregnancy in peace before sharing the news with everyone else.

There’s even a knowing twinkle in Harry’s eye that says “got ya”.

Who can blame him.

I love fact the photo was taken by Misan Harriman, the first black photographer allowed to photograph a Vogue cover.

It says a lot that they chose to share the moment with him.

So instead of taking a pop, let’s enjoy this happy news, the same way we’d enjoy the news of any young couple in love having a baby.

And, if you can say anything nice, don’t say anything at all.
