Meghan and Harry Oprah interview: Key questions that haven't been answered

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry dropped several bombshells during their tell-all interview with Oprah - from the duchess' thoughts of suicide to damaging claims of racism.

Harry, 36, revealed that the rift between him and his brother, Prince William, continues and he told how he felt "really let down" by his father, Prince Charles, and had been "cut off financially" by the royals.

The explosive interview was watched by at least 50 million TV viewers around the world and it has been dissected all week, with critics accusing Oprah Winfrey of failing to challenge her pals the Sussexes over some of their claims.

As he visited a London school, Duke of Cambridge, 38, told reporters the royals are "very much not a racist family" in his first comments, and revealed he plans to speak to his younger brother.

Charles, 72, stayed silent when journalists asked him for his reaction as he visited an NHS Covid vaccination centre in the capital.

Meghan, 39, and Prince Harry claimed a Royal Family member had expressed "concerns" over "how dark" their son Archie's skin might be before he was born in May 2019.

Buckingham Palace said the allegation was "concerning" and it would be addressed in private.

OPRAH INTERVIEW: 'I didn't want to be alive anymore' says Meghan in heartbreaking revelation

The Palace said "recollections may vary" but that it was "saddened" by the challenges faces by Harry and Meghan, who would "always be much loved family members".

In the aftermath of last Sunday's interview, Meghan has been praised for discussing her mental health, the royals are facing their biggest crisis for decades, and critics are looking for contradictions.

These are some of the inaccuracies that have been pointed out so far and key questions that haven't been answered.

Who made the comment about Archie's skin?

The Duchess of Sussex claimed a Royal Family member raised "concerns" to Harry about "how dark" Archie's skin might be when he was born.

The comment was made when Meghan was pregnant with her firstborn.

Accusing an unnamed royal of racism, Meghan, who is pregnant with a baby girl, alleged that Archie being "too brown" would be a "problem" for her in-laws.

She refused to name the royal who had the conversation with Harry, 36, but said it would be "damaging" to the person who raised it.

Harry told Oprah off camera that his grandparents, the Queen and Prince Philip, did not make the comment.

He said he is "never going to share" more about the conversation about Archie's skin colour.

The Palace said "recollections may vary".

What really went on between Meghan and Kate?

In late 2018, reports claimed Meghan made her future sister-in-law Kate Middleton cry during a bridesmaids' dress fitting days before the former Suits actress wed Harry.

Meghan told Oprah that the reports were wrong and that the "reverse happened", claiming Kate "was upset about something about flower girl dresses" and made her cry.

The American duchess said Kate "owned it and apologised", bringing her flowers and a note afterwards.

Meghan added that the false reports were a turning point.

She said "everyone in the institution knew that wasn't true" and she hoped Kate "would have wanted that to be corrected", adding "she is a good person".

However, a source told the Times that Kate did leave the dress fitting in tears and the next day took flowers to Nottingham Cottage, where Harry and Meghan were living at the time, on the grounds of Kensington Palace.

The source claimed Meghan slammed the door in Kate's face.

Did Palace deny help for Meghan?

Explaining how she had suicidal thoughts, the duchess said she "went to the institution" and said she "needed to go somewhere to get help".

But, she claims, she "was told that I couldn't, that it wouldn't be good for the institution".

She claims the Palace's human resources department also refused to help because she was not a paid employee of the institution.

Harry has told of his mental health struggles in the past and how he needed therapy to work through the grief he holds over his mum Princess Diana's death.

Did Meghan and Harry have a secret wedding?

Meghan claimed to Oprah that she and Harry had a secret wedding three days before the royal wedding at St George's Chapel, Windsor Castle.

She said it was "just the two of us in our back yard with the Archbishop of Canterbury" and "no-one knows" about the ceremony at Nottingham Cottage.

She added: "We called the Archbishop and we just said, 'Look, this thing, this spectacle is for the world but we want our union between us'."

A spokesman for the Archbishop declined to comment.

But source within the Church of England and those working for the Sussexes told the Telegraph that it was a personal and private exchange of vows and not a legal marriage as Meghan claimed.

One of the sources said: “They exchanged their vows before the Archbishop in a personal, private ceremony but their official marriage was very much on the day of the royal wedding.”

Will Archie be a prince?

Meghan suggested her toddler son Archie, who turns two in May, was denied his "birthright" title of prince because he is mixed race.

Any decision not to make Archie Mountbatten-Windsor a prince would go against convention, mum Meghan claimed.

The duchess shared her upset at the "idea of the first member of colour in this family, not being titled in the same way that other grandchildren would be".

"It's not their right to take it away," she added.

But Archie, who is seventh in line to the throne and turns two in May, is not yet entitled to be an HRH or a prince due to rules set out more than 100 years ago by King George V.

Because of the Queen's long reign and extended family - her great-grandchildren - Archie is too far removed from the throne to be a prince.

But he will be entitled to be an HRH or a prince when the Prince of Wales accedes to the throne and he becomes a grandchild of the monarch.

When did Megxit planning begin?

In late 2019, amid reports of rows and rifts, Harry, Meghan and Archie left the UK for a waterfront mansion on Vancouver Island in Canada.

In January 2020, the couple announced they were stepping back from their roles as senior royals to become "financially independent" but would still support the Queen.

Harry insisted during the interview: "I've never blindsided my grandmother. I have too much respect for her."

Meghan added: "So I remember when you talked to her several times about this [Megxit] over..."

Harry interjected: 'Two years.'

It would suggest the pair began planning to leave the family in 2018.

Did Meghan Google Harry?

The duchess claimed she was naive about what royal life would be like, saying she didn't know she had to curtsy for the Queen and was taught by Sarah Ferguson moments before meeting the Queen for the first time in 2017.

She told Oprah she had never done any internet searches on her future husband when they first started dating.

Many viewers wrote on social media that they found it hard to believe that Meghan didn't do any research.

Meghan said during the interview: "Thank God, I didn't know a lot about the family. Thank God, I hadn't researched. I would've been so in my head about it."

Meghan's childhood friend Ninaki Priddy told the Daily Mail that Meghan was a massive fan of the royals growing up and when she was an actress.

The pair visited Buckingham Palace together in 1996 when they were in their teens.

Ms Priddy said: "I know the Royal Family was something she found fascinating. She had one of Princess Diana’s books [Diana: Her True Story] on her bookshelf, and even when she was with [her first husband] Trevor [Engelson] she told me she wanted to go and stay in London for at least a month.

"I can’t remember exactly when this was, but she was married to Trevor and starring in Suits.

"I wasn’t shocked or even surprised to hear about Prince Harry. I know she used to love The Princess Diaries - films about a commoner who becomes part of a Royal Family. She was very taken with that idea."

Did royals take Meghan's passport away from her?

Meghan also claimed her passport was taken from her by the royals and she didn't see it again until she moved back to the US.

It is alleged she went on at least 13 trips abroad while a senior royal.

She told Oprah: “You couldn’t just go. You couldn’t.

"I mean, you have to understand, as well, when I joined that family, that was the last time, until we came here, that I saw my passport, my driver’s licence, my keys.

"All that gets turned over. I didn’t see any of that any more.”

Royal sources told the Sun that Meghan’s passport had to be kept safe so it didn't fall into the wrong hands.

It would still have been used by her for her holidays abroad, the sources added.

When did Meghan last see her half-sister?

Samantha Markle, 56, has made nasty comments about Meghan over the years (Inside Edition)

The duchess told Oprah she "grew up as an only child"and last saw her half-sister Samantha "18, 19 years ago... and ten years before that".

Samantha, 56, is Thomas Markle's older daughter from a previous relationship. She has made nasty comments about Meghan since the relationship with Harry was revealed.

Meghan told Oprah: " I wished I had siblings. I would have loved to have had siblings.

"I mean, the last time I saw [Samantha] must have been at least 18, 19 years ago. And before that, ten years before that."

Meghan added: "She changed her last name back to Markle.

"And I think she was in her early 50s at that time, only when I started dating Harry.

"So I think that says enough."

Samantha claims she saw Meghan as recently as 2008 and she changed her surname to Markle in 1997.
