Meghan and Harry face backlash over naming their newborn baby girl Lilibet 'Lili' Diana

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have faced backlash for the name they’ve given to their newborn baby girl.

On Sunday it was announced that Meghan Markle had given birth to a healthy baby girl weighing 7lb 11oz named Lilibet ‘Lili’ Diana Mountbatten-Windsor.

While people welcomed the news the couple had given birth to their second child, some criticised the name of the little girl, the Express reported.

They criticised Harry and Meghan for naming their child after two leading royals, as the couple appear intent on distancing themselves from the famous family.

The name Lilibet was fondly used by the late King George VI as a childhood nickname for the Queen, which has stuck with her throughout her life.

The name choice caused commentator Richard Kay to suggest it was a potential step too far.

In a column for the Daily Mail, he wrote that there was a “risk” in using the name Lilibet, even though the couple intend to use the diminutive ‘Lili’ for their daughter.

He also questioned how Prince Charles may feel about the "intimate family pet name" being given to his grandchild, having never used it himself.

While many members of the public took to social media to congratulate the couple, some criticised the couple for the name they'd given to their second child.

One wrote: “You trash the Royal family then hope this makes amends , nope.”

A second person said: “I’m actually disgusted that they have named their daughter Lilibet! That was Prince Philip's nick name for the Queen!

“After everything they have done, all the accusations & scorn they have poured on our Queen & now they take that away from her!”

Other Twitter users used the announcement to call for a celebratory ban holiday.

One person said: “Meghan Markle and Prince Harry have announced the birth of their daughter Lillibet. Congratulations to them, that calls for a bank holiday weekend next week IMO.”

Another person agreed with the suggestion, stating: “I completely agree. What better way to show respect.”
