Meghalaya: Judicial inquiry into ex-HNLC leader Cherishterfield Thangkhiew’s death

SHILLONG: The Meghalaya cabinet on Monday took several decisions in wake of the current law and order situation in Shillong city, including a judicial inquiry, to probe into the death of former general secretary of Hynnietrep National Liberation Council (HNLC), Cherishterfield Thangkhiew, in police firing during a raid on his residence on August 13.

“Apart from the judicial enquiry, the cabinet has also agreed and decided to set up a peace committee, which will be chaired by deputy CMPrestone Tynsong and cabinet ministers Hamletson Dohling and Renikton Tongkhar Lyngdoh as members,” chief minister Conrad K Sangma said.

He adding that the committee will co-opt other members from the civil society including religious organizations and other stakeholders.

“At the same time, keeping in mind the overall situation that is still prevailing in Shillong city, the cabinet decided that the curfew stands extended till Wednesday morning 5am. Ban on mobile internet data services is also extended for the next 24 hours,” the chief minister announced after the cabinet meeting here on Monday.
