SHILLONG: Chief minister Conrad K Sangma on Friday laid the foundation for the Jorabat combined water supply scheme at Mawsmai Village in Ri Bhoi district.
A multi-village water supply scheme, the project will cover the four villages of Jorabat, Mawsmai, Ampher and Ampangiri. It aims to provide hygienic and safe drinking water to the villagers through functional tap connections in households.
In the course of his address, the chief minister said that the Jal Jeevan Mission was an important and ambitious project of the Government of India to provide functional household tap connections to all rural households and implementation of such schemes under the project has been progressing well in the state.
Sangma informed that the state has been able to provide more than two lakh rural homes with functional household tap connections over the past year-and-a-half through the Jal Jeevan Mission. "I am confident that with dedicated officers and the concerned department working diligently, the state will be able to achieve the target of close to 6 lakh functional household tap connections by December 2022," he said.
The chief minister added that the project will not only help in improving the lives of the people in the area, but also free women and children from fetching water from a long distance. Sangma also impressed upon the people to conserve the catchment areas and water sources in the villages to make the project a sustainable one.
Earlier in the day, the chief minister inaugurated the newly constructed guest house of the North Eastern Police Academy at Umsaw in Ri Bhoi district, in the presence of Jirang constituency MLA Sosthenes Sohtun and MDC Victor Ranee.
Named the Brahmaputra Guest House, the facility is located inside the campus of the premier training institute and has 20 suites. It will cater to the accommodation needs of the visiting faculty and other dignitaries.
